WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY BEAUTIFUL ISLAND

I am truly bumming about what's being allowed to happen to St Maarten.
Are they deliberately trying to destroy all of our natural beauty?
Tourist in Great Bay, are supposed to be on vacation, but they are
accosted by vendors on the street. These vendors are not local,
but everyone assumes that they are.
Vacation usually means relaxing.
Why isn't the VKS protecting the tourist who are here relaxing and trying to enjoy St Maarten?
These Boardwalk "Fishers", are worse than the almost obsolete telemarketer.
They can ruin your whole day,
and some with become verbally abusive if you don't buy their wares.
St Maarten has to put a stop to the blatant disrespect to the people who feed our economy daily.

Most of our "fans" online, do not live in St Maarten.
Many are either living or studying abroad, usually in the Netherlands and the USA.
One of the requests that we are getting repeatedly, is photos of houses covered in Christmas ornaments.
We will be getting as many photos as possible, showing the sometimes outrageous Christmas down here, but we do encourage all of our readers to submit via email, their favorite Caribbean Christmas pictures.

Happy St Maarten's Day, Is St Maarten Heading In The Right Direction?

Today is November 11th 2009, St Maarten's Day, It's also the 50 year anniversary of St Maarten's Day.
Is St Maarten headed in the right direction? After 50 years, it seems St Maarten has become so dependant on the tourism industry, that people including the government is afraid to try anything else. Tourists are a vital neccesity, but shouldn't we be allowed options?
In the age of the internet, St Maarten supposedly has fiber optics buried and ready for use. How many foreigners have wanted to invest in St Maarten, but after experiencing GEBE and the poor internet quality, have given up on invested their money somewhere else?
We're not supposed to critique our island, but could Dutch St Maarten be a little bit passive? Submisive? Why is St Maarten allowed to flounder in mediocrity?
When people like Oral Gibbs, or Lloyd Richardson try to talk about it, they get dissed.
Why is someone as incompetent as Brooks allowed to control a sector of St Maarten that is so vitally important, when he clearly has no clue.
If someone was hired to flip burgers at Mcdonald's, and did such a terrible job, for such a prolonged period, they would have been fired a long time ago.
Has Brooks ever explained why he refuses to assist St Maarten into the 21st century by allowing us to use the latest in technology? St Maarten has First World potential, but many of our leaders have Third World mentalities. Where else other than a refugee camp, are people allowed to endure so many power outages. Where else can a company wantonly destroy millions in equipment, televisions, refrigerators, computers and not be obligated to pay for the damages?
How many times did GEBE power on and off Monday morning? Three times? Five times? Really, do they have some special deal with the people who sell us appliances? I'm not serious when I say that, but who profits from GEBE's incompetence? GEBE higher ups, certain politicos and appliance and generator dealers.
How about this for a St Maarten's Day resolution......how about we resolve not to tolerate GEBE's incompetence any longer. How about we resolve to evolve into a country that is not solely dependant on one source for income. People in government have Facebook accounts too, send them a friend invite to let them know, that they will not get your vote, until they actually do something that benefits St Maarten.
That's my St Maarten's day post, hopefully if the weather gets brighter we'll get some pictures and videos of todays events and activities.
Don't criticize my posts, if you are one of the people enabling the incompetence of our government. I am far from perfect, but I would like to be part of the solution.

In search of Wolverine pt1

It rained last night, so it's a lot cooler-what a relief. Why is there a huge increase in the bug population, right before it rains? I will spend the rest of the day indoors, working on my website. A truly need some studio space, so that I can be really creative with my videos, but I figure if it was meant to be... I drank some coffee, so at some point I should be awake.
If you're in St Maarten, do what the locals and travels do, eat, shop and travel like a local, it will help you dodge those crazy tourist prices.
It's raining again, back to bed.

911 perspectives...

The anniversary of 911:It's almost been ten years, hard to believe. I guess everybody remembers what they were doing, and where they were when they heard about 911.I was in Illinois waiting for the electrician to show up. I always start my morning with some coffee and the news, but that morning I turned on a music channel, and watched a video of Bob Marley singing "One Love". I thought to myself: "Why watch the news?" "It's always bad news!" It was the electrician who told me about the planes hitting the building. I of course turned on the news not believing him, and there it was.I was supposed to take the train to work, but instead like most people, I stayed glued in front of the TV. I called my boss to see if the store was open, and she said to come in. The train that I took was the Metro-Link. In ran from Scott's Air Force base in Southern Illinois, to Lambert International Airport in St Louis. There were fears among the people getting on the train, that if it was a national attack, the train or St Louis, with its Arch could be targeted. Everyone seemed to be eyeing each other suspiciously. At the Savvis Center, a group of men boarded the train with turbans on their heads, and the train emptied.A few years later, I saw campaign posters everywhere in Black neighborhoods introducing an up and coming politician in Illinois. His name was Barack Obama. I stared at the poster in disbelief, and especially stared at the name. I then proceeded to laugh my ass off. "No way!!!" I said to my friend. "How crazy is this guy to run for office with a name like Barack Obama?". "No one will ever vote for a guy with that name". More important than just remembering 911, I believe is seeing how far we've comes since that moment on September 11 2001. To realize the fear and hatred that permeated the city during those dark times, when everyone was treating everyone else with suspicion, and the government encourage and fed these fears. 911, was a catalyst for many changes, and we must remember that.R.I.P. victims of 911

Flora and Fauna St Maarten

I've spent a lot of time photographing the flowers of St Maarten. Beautiful flowers and plants with French names that I could never properly pronounce or write. When it comes to the local fauna, I've had several encounters. Down by the coast there are lot of "sea" cats, cats abandoned or lost by their owners and survive off of sea creatures washing up on shore, or kind tourist. You can tell the ones that were once indoors, because they tend to approach you cautiously for food. Most are semi-feral, and will only eat if you put the food down, and walk away. I was approached on Backstreet by a trembling kitten looking for food. He was starving, his shoulders and hips were one thin line. I took him home, and now he's doing okay when he's not trying to escape. I can only assume the rest of the litter died. I went back the next day to see if there were more, but the gentlemen nearby said that they had only seen one starving kitten in the area, which means he got lost. I hope his siblings are okay.
Last night a huge green frog jumped through my bedroom window. I felt something wet touch my shoulders but when I turned on the lights, I couldn't see anything. I kept hearing weird plopping noises-and the cat did too-but I chose to ignore it. Then the kitten started going crazy, and so did the frog, so I had to grab a sock and rescue to poor frog, before the kitten got him.
I couldn't figure out if I should let it play out, like it would have in the wild-the kitten would have loved that-, but then I couldn't. The kitten kept looking for it, and harrassing me for about an hour, then past out.
This morning when I woke up, he was still looking for it.

Why are you rushing? Are you a Russian?

Why the American Dream? Well, actually St Maarten is the world's dream. It's a place that people dream about escaping to. Part Dutch, part French. Two distinct cultures, with English as the language of communication. I could not open my mouth in The USA, without someone asking me where I was from, and how they could get there. It's a dream. Where else on earth can you go, where the relativety of time is almost visible. Where everything moves at a leisurely pace.
Where locals stare at you if you are in a hurry. "Are you a Russian?" they will ask... "No?"
"Then don't be in such a Rush".
Some get it, some don't. I have to re-adapt, and re-adjust. I'm using to being in a rush, planes trains and automobiles. And I'm also a native St Maartener, so I'm considered twice as weird as any foreign visitor. My motives are suspect. " Where are you always going with that backpack?", I've been asked. Why are you always speeding from place to place.
The answer is very simple. My backpack is my office. It contains two laptops, for cameras, a fews USB cords, and miscellenious CD's and DVD's.
I arrived in April, for two weeks...and yet I'm still here. The shutterbug has re-emerged, and I've spent most of my time taking photographs (over 20.000) in the island.
I shot over 20 hours of footage, but all footage has to be re-dubbed because of the lousy mic on the camera. I intend to upload as many pictures and videos of St Maarten as I can, so that the world can see The Caribbeans best kept secret.
